Claire King health: ‘I struggled to go to work’ Emmerdale star on her chronic condition

Claire King, 57, is a long established soap star. The actress joined the cast of ITV’s Emmerdale back in 1989. The intervening years since joining the show have not been easy, however. Speaking to the, the actress opened up about her daily battle with rheumatoid arthritis, a condition she was diagnosed with shortly after joining the soap.

It feels like my whole body is falling apart

Expressing her concerns for the future, King said: “I worry about my health deteriorating. It scares me.

“It feels like my whole body is falling apart. I have elderly parents and they’ve got problems too, so I want to be around to help them.

“I don’t want to be a helpless old woman who can’t do anything for anyone because all my joints are falling apart.

“That’s what motivates me to look after my health.”

Rheumatoid arthritis is a long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints.

King was initially alerted to the condition when she woke up to a “throbbing pain” in her fingers, three days in a row. The condition usually affects the hands, feet and wrists.

The soap star revealed just how debilitating the condition had become and said: “I had started getting really bad aches in my hands, feet and knees – it felt like I had been hit with a hammer.

“My doctor put me on a course of medication and gave me some advice about helpful things to try to ease the pain. But for a while it just carried on getting worse.

“I would get up in the morning and be hobbling like an old woman because my joints hurt so much.

“I struggled to go to work and to do the things I love, like horse-riding, because of the pressure it put on my knees.”

As the NHS explained, along with joint pain and stiffness, people living with rheumatoid arthritis may also experience:

  • Tiredness and a lack of energy
  • A high temperature
  • Sweating
  • A poor appetite
  • Weight loss

While there is no condition for the cure, painful symptoms can be alleviated by taking certain medications and making necessary lifestyle changes, noted the NHS.

The soap star found taking natural products helped her to keep symptoms at bay: “My doctor suggested I try some natural products: Hellenia’s MSM tablets, Celadrin tablets and joint relief cream.

“They were fantastic – particularly the cream, which relieves the pain in about half an hour.

“It was great, because I could use them when I was really struggling and everything became much more manageable.”
