WHO warns of doubling of global cancer cases

The number of cancer cases will double, according to the world health organization, WHO, up to the year 2040 in the world almost. According to the world cancer report, International Agency for research on cancer (IARC), the WHO world cancer day has published. 2018 patients worldwide, about 18.1 million people newly diagnosed with cancer. In the year 2040 this number will rise according to estimates by the IARC to 29 to 37 million people.

Also the chief of the German cancer research center, Michael Baumann, consider this development to be realistic. Reasons for the increasing and ageing world population, but also “lifestyle factors,” said Baumann in Berlin on Monday. For Germany we expect an increase in the annual incidence of is currently at 500,000 to 600,000 cases.

Baumann stressed the importance of a healthy lifestyle. “According to current knowledge, you could, if you comply to all what we know currently, in fact, 40 per cent of cancers by primary prevention to prevent.” Baumann called things knew many people who would not but were still implemented particularly well: not Smoking, no Obesity, physical activity, healthy diet, little or no alcohol, and “all the vaccinations and precautions exercise recommended against cancer”.

Risk Factor Smoking

Approximately 19 percent of all preventable cases of cancer are attributable to cigarette. Smoking is considered the most important preventable risk factor in the development of cancer. Also, passive smoke poses a risk.

Smokers develop more lung cancer than non-smokers. Around nine out of ten men with lung cancer have contracted the disease, probably from Smoking. For women, there are six out of ten people Affected. In addition, there are correlations with many other types of cancer, such as oral cavity, esophagus, or larynx cancer.

So you lower your risk:

Stop with the Smoking. A stop Smoking is worth it at any age. The following applies: The earlier in the life is omitted, the greater the positive effect. Ten years after the last cigarette the risk of certain cancers, decreases diseases, such as the mouth, trachea and esophagus cancer. The risk to develop lung cancer, decreases in comparison to people who have smoked to the half.

The world health organization WHO estimates, especially with an increase in cancer in poor countries. In countries with low-and middle-income level by the year 2040, the number of cancer cases will rise without resolute action to 81 percent, the report says. The limited health resources in these countries would flow, especially in the combat of infections and the care of mothers and small children. Measures against cancer would be neglected.

All cancer patients should benefit equally

According to the IARC Director, Elisabete Weiderpass, led to improvements in cancer treatment in wealthy countries, cases in the period between 2000 and 2015 to a 20-percent decline in the Rate of death. In the poorer countries only a five per cent reduction had been achieved. Throughout the world cancer patients of the therapy should benefit improvements “equally”, she demanded.

In Germany, 65 percent of all cancer patients survive at present for at least five years. Thus, Germany international ahead of the pack. That did not mean also, “the fact that 35 percent of all of its citizens suffering from cancer, survival of five years”. Baumann pleaded for a “major research effort” in all three areas: prevention, early detection and therapies.

The Federal government had launched a year ago, the “National decade against cancer” to life, to connect the cancer research better. With up to 62 million Euro studies should be promoted, the disease practice in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer is crucial to improve, said Minister of research, Anja Karliczek (CDU) on Monday.
